If you’ve been paying attention to, and supporting, the Occupy Movement going on worldwide (and you should be – what they do affects pretty much everybody), then this book will give you both chills and a vindicated feeling.

Written by Misha Glenny (author of McMafia), Dark Market brings the dark side of capitalism to the forefront. Because of cybercrime, the banks profit, and we lose. They might say they lose, too – but it’s not their pockets the money comes out of, now is it?

Have you ever had a phishing email – you know, one where you get the “Dear Friend, I am pleased to inform you that you have been named as heir to a long lost cousin in Poland. Please send your banking and contact information and we will deposit  XX amount of money into your account” email from someone who obviously just wants your bank info so he can steal from you? That’s pretty much what this book is about.

We learn how cyber-war, cyber-terrorism, and cybercrime are all linked and flourish in the dark corners of the Internet. Our dependence on social network platforms, the convenience of online features, and economic growth lead to a tragic tale. Woven into the story is a moral tale to which we should all take heed…if it’s not too late.

The book is well-researched and reads well. The one sentence that seems to best state the premise of the book is this: “Crime detection and civil liberties have always been uneasy bedfellows, but their coexistence has been significantly more troubled since the spread of the Internet.”

My rating for Dark Market: Cyberthieves, Cybercops and You is 4: This was pretty good.
