This fashion season has started with a pop, of color, print, and pastel; and on Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway, a pop of the late Amy Winehouse. During his January 25th show, the designer used pop colored divas, all resembling Amy Winehouse. The playlist for the show featured all the singer’s ’ greatest hits, from “back to black” to “rehab”. The collection was a joyful homage to the troubled London chanteuse and her quirky bohemian style.
The talented artist, Amy Winehouse, died last year of alcohol poisoning. She was credited as being the inspiration for the Chanel cruise collection held in London, but Gaultier’s collection caught more of her visual persona. Winehouse was famous for mixing motifs and eras, for her juxtaposition of unusual fabrics, all captured during the show.
All elements of Amy were present during the show: her famous beehive styled hair, done in multiple colored versions, cat eye makeup, the beauty mark, and her famous silhouette, all done in couture versions. His show was a mix of sultry, sex kitten, and new shapes.
Colors were intertwined with shapes of suits and jackets. Lace peeked out from the bottom of just over the knee length dresses and from between the slits of maxi dresses. I loved the pairing of the varsity jacket with the maxi skirt. Gaultier created a whimsical pop diva tribute that captured signature traits of the famed r&b singer. A final fashion affair fit for the woman who had the voice of an angel. R.I.P Amy Winehouse
