To commemorate the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution, Revealing Mexico Week will celebrate the culture and people of Mexico with a weeklong series of special events in the heart of New York City.
The Host Committee for Revealing Mexico Week includes President Bill Clinton (Honorary Chairman), Ajay Banga (Host Chairman), Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan (Honorary Vice Chairman) and Founding Members: Carlos Slim, Salma Hayek Pinault, Placido Domingo, New York Jets Quarterback Mark Sanchez, Photographer John C. Mack, Writer Susanne Steines, Charlie Rose and many more.
The fall of 2010 marks a historic period for Mexico, as the country commemorates both its bicentennial anniversary of independence from Spain and the centennial anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Hosted by Tishman Speyer, and supported by the Embassy of Mexico and its Consulate General in New York, Revealing Mexico Week will give the people of New York City the opportunity to participate first-hand in the special celebration from October 25th through October 31st in Rockefeller Center.
Revealing Mexico Week will honor the traditions and people of Mexico, while also spotlighting the country’s unique contemporary culture through a weeklong series of events, including: a gala kick-off reception, a special photography installation and artist book signing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store, a highly anticipated culinary tasting with one of Mexico’s top chefs, and free concert performances ranging from classical to the cutting edge of modern Mexican music.
REVEALING MEXICO WEEK – Opening Night Gala: The VIP cocktail reception at Top of The Rock™ on the evening of October 25th will bring together many of New York and Mexico’s leading celebrity, cultural, financial and political figures.
The Revealing Mexico Photography Exhibit will display twenty-four striking black & white images from photographer John Mack’s and writer Susanne Steines’ newly released book Revealing Mexico — from which the concept of the Rockefeller Center event was founded. The photographs will be on display from October 25 through October 31 in the world-renowned Channel Gardens. John Mack and Susanne Steines will also take part in a book signing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store at Rockefeller Center on October 27th from 5-7pm. As part of MasterCard’s Priceless NYC program that is currently running, they will be rewarding a group of lucky cardholders on Oct 27 with a private tour of the exhibit hosted by John Mack. Consumers simply have to log on to facebook.com/mastercard to participate.
A taste of modern Mexican cuisine will take place at the Rock Center Café at 4pm on October 26th, as the country’s top-rated chef Martha Ortiz (owner of Mexico City’s hottest new restaurant, Dulce Patria) showcases her critically praised signature dishes. Mexican themed menu items and cocktails will also be integrated into the Rock Center Café’s menu for the entire week.
Highlighting Mexico’s long tradition of classical music, the young artists of Sociedad Internacional de Valores de Arte Mexicano (SIVAM) will host the first-ever Opera in the Rink with a performance on the evening of October 26th. SIVAM is a non-profit institution dedicated to music education for children and the promotion of the Fine Arts in Mexico.
Later that night of October 26th, fans of modern Mexican music will gather in Rockefeller Center for a free concert by the Nortec Collective‘s Bostich + Fussible. Echoing the wide critical praise for the Grammy-nominated ensemble, NPR recently raved: “This is the sound for a new Mexico: The Tijuana-based Nortec Collective makes a soundtrack for a digital generation, with a mix of traditional norteno accordions, turntables, and electronica.”
Meet-n-greet and autograph signing with Rafael Márquez, Captain of the Mexican National Soccer Team and star Red Bulls Player. 6-7pm on Tuesday, October 26 at LA Sports Club at 45 Rockefeller Plaza.
