In VH1’s Price of Beauty, a documentary-like reality series, Jessica Simpson travels around the world to explore global beauty and self esteem issues. Simpson ends up finding that despite the different standards of beauty around the world, they are all standards that know one should HAVE to live by. The documentary is conflicting in certain areas but this may be in large part, to Simpson, not wanting to speak how she feels about another culture’s standards of beauty. Her overall intentions are good and helpful, which is the most important aspect of it all.
Jessica embarks on this journey with two of her best friends, Ken Paves (also, her hairstylist) and Cacee Cobb, and challenges the very mindset that criticized her weight on the cover of tabloids all across America. If anyone can relate to being on the receiving end of criticism, it would be Jessica Simpson. This show is sure to resonate with women all across America and beyond as we already know that she’s been there and she is not trying to understand – she truly does understand.
She was labeled as fat and put under a Hollywood microscope where her weight and appearance were severely judged. Her relationships have been scrutinized ever since her split from her husband Nick Lachey. She’s been through a lot of pain in front of the public eye and some say she welcomed the scrutiny when she opted to be a part of the reality show, Newlyweds, with then husband, Nick Lachey; however, this is not a logical stance as many celebrities that have never been on a reality show are still treated similarly.
Jessica Simpson embodies the ideal American Beauty standard in many ways, with blond hair and brown eyes; she’s the All American Girl Next Door that all of us feel pressured to look like. So what does this tell us? We are all beautiful. Standards Shmandards!!! We should not live by the next person’s standard of beauty. We create the standards for ourselves.
We can only hope that this can be a continuation of an important discussion. Other celebrities, including Tyra Banks, have spoken out about unfair standards of beauty. And we will be on the look out for more on this national and international discussion.

The Price of Beauty, VH1, premiered mid-March10 p.m. ET/PT-
According to The Price of Beauty site on VH1, Jessica Simpson and her friends will be:
Journeying from Tokyo and Thailand, to Paris and Rio, to Uganda, Morocco and India — the cast is met in each city by a “beauty ambassador” who helps them tackle topics revolving around fashion, fitness, diet and outlandish spa treatments. In each country, Jessica, Ken and CaCee experience firsthand some of the local beauty rituals, from drinking cow urine in India, to being buried up to their necks in Tokyo, to drinking gourds of ghee in a fattening hut in Uganda. But it’s not all fun and games — Jessica also explores the high price that some women pay to feel beautiful. Imagine the plight of women in Northern Thailand, who wear 20-pound rings around their necks, crushing their clavicles, to a mother in Rio who cannot afford electricity, but is secretly saving for butt implants.
Jessica Simpson looks great and in shape in the shorts and t-shirt. Not so fashionable with the dresses she has been chosing. Other than that she is gorgeous woman.
