Nothing speaks to the American spirit of fashion than the 60’s and 70’s.  Although decades have past since the‘hippie’ era, certain styles continue to stand the test of time. The fall and winter seasons are all about 70’s fashion.

A popular trend seen in the streets are high waist wide leg jeans and pant styles. Wide leg silhouettes are showing up on all the starlets this season; Eva Mendes, the Olsen twins, Kim Kardashian and others.  The silhouette can be very flattering, if done properly.  They pay homage to a powerful movement in American history.

The hippie subculture started in the 1970’s. Its impact on fashion was seen through bell-bottoms and wide leg jeans, platforms, maxi skirts; it essentially gave birth to the ‘androgynous look’. The androgynous look intertwines male and female characteristics and for the sake of fashion – garments. This look was the threshold to the unisex clothing idea, which has been seen, in American lines such as; Alexander Wang and Jason Wu.

This season, designer denim lines have great high waist options. Washes go from a traditional blue jean to color hues, such as punch or Kelly green to dark trouser washes. You can pull off a great casual look with a solid tee and a cardigan; dress it up with a billowy blouse and fur.

The high waist trend is one that comes and goes every few years. The look is representative of an era of peace, love, and self-acceptance. With the reemergence of this trend, more fabric choices have been created giving the pant style many different looks. As they say, history repeats itself, as does fashion.
