I reached out to The Gourmet Travelista’s Judith Jones for some of her tried and true traveling tips and more! Check out the Q & A below! Be sure to check out her blog, as well.
Pack light! No one wants to be lugging around a heavy suitcase. It encourages more spontaneity on your trip, and also gives you a nice little excuse to buy traditional and unique things from the country you are visiting!
Where did you last travel to?
I last traveled through Central Mexico. It was for the Travel Show I was hosting called Globe Trekker. We went from Chihuahua in the north down to Mexico City. Mexico is so rich in culture, history and people. It was such a great experience.
What can you share about your first major travel experience?
My first major travel experience was to Edmonton, Canada. I was performing in a Musical at the Edmonton Fringe Festival when I was 17. Coming from England, everything seemed so big and oversized compared to my little Britain…the roads, the supermarkets, the people! But there was a warmth and a welcoming with open arms that I will never forget.
What is a must have travel accessory?
A good sized travel bag…. for hand luggage. It should be big enough to fit your MAC Book Air, with compartments for all your accessories and toiletries. It should preferably be in a nice soft leather, or suede. A classic chic and sophisticated color in a camel color or light grey will usually go with any outfit.
Do you have a favorite travel destination or experience?
One of my favorite travel experiences was hiking up Machu Picchu in Peru. It was a 4 day hike, camping out in the mountains, with a small group. It was beautiful, challenging and spiritual. There is nothing like waking up at 5 in the morning, and brushing your teeth outside in nature, above the clouds. After the trip, I got to experience the spectacular gastronomy of Peru which is absolutely spectacular. One of my favorite global cuisines.
What country do you live in and what is your background plus what have you learned about culture from your travels?
I live in Los Angeles, but was born in Paraguay to a Paraguayan mother and a Welsh Father. I grew up in Wales and Newcastle in the north of England. I have also lived and studied in London and New York City. Traveling has opened my mind and heart to the world, to the people in it, to the spectacular beauty and cultures that this world offers. It has made me into an open minded, more understanding ,sympathetic and respectful person with a great appreciation for life.
In addition to your travels, what else have you been up to?
I am currently hosting the show, Globe Trekker, airing on PBS in the US and Travel Channel International, as well as the arts and culture show, Bazaar, airing on Discovery International. You can follow my food and travel tips & recommendations around the Globe, on my blog, The Gourmet Travelista, www.gourmetravelista.com.
