Christmas Classic | “Merry Christmas” album by Mariah Carey

The holidays: Gatherings with family and friends, baking cookies, drinking eggnog, watching pristine snowfall, decorating, wrapping gifts, and stealing kisses under the mistletoe. Many of you view your holidays differently, but there is one common factor: Listening to those classic Christmas albums, those sing-along gems that we’ve waited all year to listen to. These songs sound great each year when we sing them, but have you ever sang them in a five octave range? Me neither!!! But someone has. None other than diva extraordinaire Mariah Carey!!!

Merry Christmas, Mariah’s fourth studio album was released on November 1, 1994. The album features cover versions of both popular Christmas tunes and original material. The album contains a contemporary holiday theme, with gospel inspired background vocals.

Mimi’s golden pipes shine brightly throughout: The melodic beauty of Silent Night, the vocal prowess of Joy to the World, and the serene soul of Oh Holy Night, are only 3 major reasons why Merry Christmas has been a holiday staple in countless households for many years.

Released during the peak of Carey’s career, there is no doubt that Merry Christmas was a huge success. Much of the album’s acclaim has to do with the album’s lead single, “All I Want for Christmas Is You“. This up-tempo, 1950s malt shop flavored, pop confection is a love song. The lyrics declare that Mimi does not care about Christmas presents or material things. All she wants for Christmas is to be united with her lover for the holidays. It has currently become the best-selling holiday ring tone in the US. An “extra festive” version of the song is featured on her second Christmas album, 2010’s Merry Christmas II You. But as the old saying goes, nothing tops the original.

As of January, 2012, the album has sold over 5,500,000 copies in the United States and over 7,000,000 internationally. According to Nielsen Sound Scan, it has been certified five-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Overall, Merry Christmas has sold over 15 million copies worldwide, allowing it to become one of the biggest selling Christmas albums of all time. Wow!!! That’s the perfect reason for Mrs. Cannon to dance around her tree with her hubby and their beautiful babies. I would say pick it up, but if you’re a real Mimi fan, you already own it, so dust it off and press play. Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!
