Violence runs unchecked against women in Afghanistan

As the world watches, women in Afghanistan continue to be killed at an alarming rate. While some of the ill-treated have fallen prey to domestic violence and pious extremists, others have suffered from the actions of American forces. For women, there is no safe haven in Afghanistan.

Though some progress has been achieved, women in Afghanistan continue to be victimized by tribal ethnocentrism, the politics of war and a patriarchal society that openly embraces misogyny as a tool of repression. One group of daring women has defied the suicide bombers, encroaching military and centuries-old traditions by opening an Internet café, in honor of a girl who tried to stand up for her rights, only to be murdered.

In a region of Afghanistan where cyberculture and mobile phones have been permanently banned, two women were brutally murdered outside the family’s home. No one made an effort to come to their aid or report the incident to local police.
