Head Over Heels: A High Heel Review

Like diamonds, high heels are a girl’s best friend. While this fact may seem amusing, it was proven true a very long time ago. During the 16th century, European royalty started wearing high-heeled shoes to make them look taller or larger than life. By 1580, men also wore them, and all this time I was under the assumption that Prince (the singer) did that first. Go figure! One cool tidbit about back then is that a person with authority or wealth was often referred to as “well-heeled”.
Why do we love high heels so much? It’s not only the bright, bold colors, accented with glitter and rhinestones, nor is it the soft satin, shiny leather, or plush suede. It is simply the way they improve our overall appearance. Here’s how:
-
They change our posture, requiring a more uptight carriage and altering the gait in what is considered a seductive fashion
-
They change the angle of the foot with respect to the lower leg, which accentuates the appearance of calves.
-
They make us appear taller.
-
They make the legs appear longer
-
They make the foot appear smaller
-
They make the arches of the feet higher and better defined
Cool huh? Gals love investing in a good pair of heels, as they are the trendiest accessory to complete each outfit. (Plus guys and gals, alike, love to watch!) For example, a party dress without those matching party heels is irrelevant. The perfect heels add that extra ooooh to any dress, business suit, or pair of jeans. There are a select few that will give you the most use and still make you feel sexy each time that you wear them. So, for all of you avid high heel fans here is a short list of each heel that every woman must own:
Pumps
Whether it is a peep toe or platform, these heels can go with you to work, to play and anytime in between. They are the “Little Black Dress” kind of footwear. Lightweight, strapless shoes with closed backs they are the handiest for anytime of the day. They can have heels as high as 4 inches or more in comparison to stilettos
Evening sandals
These are great to have for formal affairs like weddings or fancy dinners. They also work great to dress up with jeans or a casual dress. They mostly have moderate or medium heels.
Stilettos
Stilettos are typically the highest of all the heels, sometimes up to eight inches, and they can be difficult to walk in because the heels are thin and provide very little surface for stability. If you’re new to wearing heels, you may want to practice before attempting to walk a far distance in these. Good quality stilettos have leather uppers with padded insoles to cushion the balls of the feet. Stilettos are mostly worn with after 5pm wear.
High heeled boot
Boots are comfortable and stylish. They work great for a night on the town, or a casual meeting with family and friends. Some variations include the ankle6 boot, the knee high boot, thigh high boot or cowboy boot.
The mere mention of all of these different styles of heels is tempting me to purchase a new pair. You want to join me don’t cha? Come on ladies! Let’s get happy and get heeled! Men, take note and get a pair for your special lady!
Music Review | “Some Nights” by Fun
Lets get ready to have some Fun! This New York based American Indie band is one of the most intriguing new bands to emerge recent years. After making a huge buzz with their 2012 hit “We Are Young,” Fun is back with “Some Nights,” from their second album of the same name. Released on June 4, 2012, The song has sold over 4 million copies in the US as of January 2013. “Some Nights” is an Indie pop song with elements of power pop and traces of African drums.
The lyrics of “Some Nights” speak of feelings of self-deprecation and loneliness. This song is relatable because some of symptoms mentioned, are ones that we all have felt at least once. The song became Fun’s second single to enter the chart’s top ten, as well as their second song to be certified platinum in the US.
Lyrically, “Some Nights” has been a successful single in countries around the world. It has reached number one in Australia, New Zealand, and Israel. The song has also reached the top ten in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Austria, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, and has so far made the top 30 in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.
In the United States, it also debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 the same week their album “Some Nights” debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200.
With a voice similar to the sincerity of a young Paul McCartney mixed with boldness of Freddy Mercury, Lead vocalist Nate Ruess expresses his angst of being a long way from home, with memorable lines like:
My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called love
and when I look into my nephew’s eyes
Man, you wouldn’t believe the most amazing things that can come from
Some terrible nights.
And thought provoking lyrics such as:
Well, some nights I wish that this all would end
‘Cause I could use some friends for a change.
And some nights I’m scared you’ll forget me again
Some nights I always win, I always win…
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh, Lord, I’m still not sure what I stand for, oh
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights I don’t know… (oh, come on)
Despite its somber lyrical content, the upbeat tempo makes “Some Nights” total enjoyment. With this being said, procrastination isn’t an option. Its time get up, get out, and engage in some pure Fun!
