Rossland – a valley among mountains

RosslandBritishColumbia

Topped with snow, everything seems picturesque in Rossland, British Columbia.  The area is simply enveloping – any time of year.  Mainly surrounded by mountains, the region has lakes, marshes, rivers and streams. Rossland is down in a valley, a small town with over 3,000 occupants.  A great place for outdoor activities.  Mountain biking is the most popular activity here.

Once a mining town, bikers can ride old wagon roads, rail grades and pack trails. The Seven Summits is an enormous trail.  The Seven Summits’ 30 kilometer ride provides a continuous single track, sharp ascents, and crazy descents along the alpine ridges of the Rossland Range mountains.  You can bike between Nancy Greene Summit and Cascade Summit.  The small town, with wide streets but not a traffic light hanging, lodges some small salons.

If you’re looking for a place to dine, Idgie’s Fine Foods offers Italian food.  A quaint setting where you can select Idgie’s House Pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and spinach.  There’s also Old Fire Hall, where you can pick from more than 40 wines.

The town of Rossland was discovered in 1898. RED Mountain Resort, a ski area, was the place where deposits of gold-copper ore were found in 1890. The Rossland Ski Club was found, soon after, in 1896. They had the first recorded ski competitions in Canada.  There are 110 trails on RED Mountain and 2,682 acres of skiing. It’s known for its powdery trails.  The resort has the world’s largest cat skiing.  It facilitates four cats a day with different ability levels.  The mountain has the best tree skiing and glades in the area and guides are CSGA and ACMG qualified.

The Rossland Winter Carnival is held at the bottom of the mountain on the last weekend in January, every year.  Olaus Jeldness was the Norwegian miner who, in 1897, began the Winter Carnival.  He asked his friends to the top of RED Mountain for a “Tea Party.”  During the carnival, there are Big Air fireworks.   There is a parade with opportunities to win a seasons ski pass and a variety show.  There are, also, bobsled races and ice sculptures.  There is plenty to be seen in this small visitor’s locale.

Passerby’s come from many places to the westernmost of Canada’s 10 provinces.  It runs along the Pacific Ocean, not too far from the seashore but far North so winters are cold.  Still, the town is closed in by mountains – mountains that bring all kinds of interesting things to the area.

San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival grand tasting a grand slam

To commemorate its tenth anniversary, this year’s San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival pulled out all the stops to create a memorable week-long event that was the largest and tastiest yet. This venerable annual event has come of age, solidifying itself as one of the most highly anticipated and well-reputed culinary festivals in the nation revered by wine and food enthusiasts, media, chefs and winemakers alike. Attendance at the finale Grand Tasting Event is case in point, as foodies and oenophiles came out in droves to sip, savor, and celebrate the best from the who’s who elite of the food and winery scene in San Diego and beyond.

This year’s festival, coined the “Decade of Decadence” event, was held from November 18-24th and included an array of epicurean experiences during the five days—none more impressive than the culinary star-studded Grand Tasting Event that was again held at San Diego’s gorgeous Embarcadero Marina North location behind Seaport Village. On hand were no less than 200 national and international wineries, breweries, and distillers, pouring some of the most renowned wines, beers, and spirits on the market today as well as 70 San Diego restaurants and gourmet food purveyors, dishing up cuisine from uber-talented chefs. To make the event sizzle even more, San Diego’s best chefs also competed at the event in a heated $50,000 “Chef of the Fest Competition.” Amid views of the stunning San Diego Bay and picture perfect Sunday weather,   the Embarcadero became a true Mecca for those seeking a fun-filled food and beverage scene.

Those who opted to purchase the $175 VIP Experience (over the $125 advance or $150 gate ticket price) enjoyed early entry into the Grand Tasting Event among other perks like exclusive access into the VIP Tent with live entertainment, special tastings, and a gift bag that was filled to the brim with sweet event swag.

Of course, beyond the incredible Grand Tasting Event, there was so much more that preceded this affair throughout the festival. Celebrity chefs were available to sign their cookbooks and burgeoning chefs got to learn from the best during cooking classes, including Passion for Fusion and the Southwestern Holiday Showstoppers presented by Cooking Light Magazine both held at Macy’s School of Cooking.

Others looking to be educated in the art and science of wine were able to participate and wine tasting seminars, such as the Pinot Nirvana held at the Marriott Marquis & Marina, as well as multiple wine and food pairing luncheons and dinners. In total, there were 25 culinary and beverage events held at various locations throughout San Diego, making it the most comprehensive festival dedicated to the palate.

For those who wanted to burn off some of those delicious calories accumulated over the course of the festival, there was even the first Fit Foodie 5K at the San Diego Waterfront. This event featured an exclusive area for racers and supporters called the Finisher’s Village with cooking demonstrations, a refresh and refuel station, beer and wine tastings, goodie bags, fitness discussions and celebrity chefs.

In all, the 10th Annual San Diego Wine and Food Festival, which is produced by World of Wine Events, has set the bar exceedingly high. Indeed, they’ve left gourmands near and far hungering for more, and the 2014 festival will most certainly be another unforgettable epicurean experience.

Loss of a legend, Nelson Mandela, 1918-2013

“Sun City” By : Artists United Against Apartheid

Scholar, African nationalist, mediator, democratic socialist, Philanthropist, peacemaker, innovator, husband, and father. What do these characteristics have in common? They are just a few words to thoroughly describe the honorable Rolihlahla “Nelson” Mandela, who passed away.

In his native Xhosa language, Rolihlahla means, “pulling the branch of a tree” the other meaning is “troublemaker”. The name Nelson was actually given to him by his teacher Ms. Mdingane on his first day of school. He was unclear about why she chose that name.

Often denounced as a terrorist, the Transkei South African born leader gained international acclaim for his activism, becoming the recipient of countless honors, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize and the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and President of South Africa, also, served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997.

The first black South African to hold the office, he focused on abolishing apartheid while tackling inequality, racism, and poverty encouraging racial reconciliation. After recent years of battling health issues, including a recurring lung infection, “The Father of the Nation” departed this life on Thursday, December 5. He was 95.

In 1952, he was appointed superintendent of the ANC Defiance Campaign’s Transvaal Chapter. There, he presided over the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for subversive activities and was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961.

Although initially committed to non-violent protest, he led a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government. On June 12, 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.

Mandela served a total of 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was finally granted in 1990. Mandela opened negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, where he led the ANC to victory.

His Cherished Legacy –

Mandela will be remembered for many intriguing things, including beating many odds, breaking countless barriers, and being the face of freedom. However, it’s his message of forgiveness and reconciliation that will remain with us the most.

After his 1990 release from prison Mandela stated, “As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

In 2009, Mandela’s birthday, which is July 18, was declared “Mandela Day” to promote global peace and celebrate the South African leader’s legacy.

There will be many events over the next few days, with the main event being an official memorial service to be held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on December 10, 2013. Mandela’s body will be in Pretoria and a state funeral will be held on the 15th of December 2013 in Qunu.

Mandela once stated, “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” Like many other lessons that he has taught, this still proves to be one of the truest to this day.

Mr. Mandela, renowned freedom fighter and iconic world symbol of peace, we salute you and will never forget you. Rest peacefully.

Paris – A lover’s walk among the squares

Paris is perfect for a lover’s walk among the squares.

A patchwork of dozens of shapes are put together into the Jardin des Tuileries.  The Parisians made their tile out of clay soil and tile factories stood where the Palais des Tuileries rose.  Much of the garden still displays a tile-like break up with square courtyards and formed paths.  At least 3,000 chairs dot the paths of the gardens.  You may to bring an umbrella to block the light, or protect from raindrops on dreary days.  Paris

The lawns are strewn with sculptures by known artists – from Rodin, The Kiss, Eve, Meditation and The Great Shadow and works by Max Ernst.  There are two ponds where birds may bother to sit and children drop their coins.  There is a circular promenade where paths converge.  You can come across just about any stroller on this demure garden.  The paths are outlined by trimmed trees in different shapes.  The garden opened in 1664, laid out by Andre Le Notre.   You may find a corner to have a bottle of wine and cheese while you rest on the lap of another.  All paths arrive at the Eiffel Tower, built in 1889.  Built of iron, the lattice tower took two years to make.  Like a needle sticking out of the sky, its shape is different from any other tower.   Its openness may be its most ornate attribute.  Any person can see through its gaps from up in the air and receive the wind from the city.  Its insurmountable height, 10,000 feet, begins with an arched open area below, where you can look up at its height and realize how small you are compared to this great iron reproduction.

The bridges of the Seine River are a sight.  Many arches are supported by balustrades with embroidered flourishes.  Leaves form unique decorations.  On the sides of the river, giant rings still hang that used to tie boats to the shore.  Staircases lead up to the street.  The river winds through Paris.  There are 32 bridges along the water.

The river, curving and moving brings a history together.  The 761 ft. Pont Neuf bridge has a total of 12 arches and was opened in 1607.  It was the first bridge with pavements making it a meeting place.  The Pont Des Arts bridge is located near the Louvre and it is a nine-arch metallic footbridge.   Adorned with thousands of locks from past lovers, you can visit the bridge and put your lock up on the railing.  It is a place to encapsulate your love and leave a mark on Paris’ history.

Paris is the city of lights and if you are with your lover these lights are even brighter.  Enjoy the amazing sight of the Eiffel Tower lit up so that its entwined structure sparkles in the dark evening; walk the way of the Seine River and watch the street lamps reflect off the water; or trod that Jardin des Tuileries during a wonderful day and share your umbrella with the one you admire to keep the sunlight away from your faces.
