thor-the-dark-world-3aMarvel has another hit on their hands. The Alan Taylor directed Thor: The Dark World continues the adventures of the “God of Thunder” as he battles to save Earth and the Nine Realms from the evil Malekith. Stellar Vibe and Victuals at Vintana Restaurant

Credit_Cohn_Restaurant_Group_Vintana_2The Cohn Restaurant Group has done it again. The award-winning company, which now owns and operates 16 restaurants within the San Diego area and Maui, has hit a home run with one of its newer North County venues: Vintana.  This eatery, uniquely located on the penthouse level of the Lexus luxury car dealership in Escondido, melds the best of fine California modern dining, hospitality, and atmosphere for an experience that’ll make you want to return again and again.

With such a curious and unexpected location, the restaurant’s General Manager Greg Provance is questioned about it often. Regarding the site, he remarks, “It is the brainchild of Judy Jones Cone who owns Lexus of Escondido and Lexus/Toyota Carlsbad.  She had always envisioned a center with Lexus at the heart of it where people could come and have a multi-sensory experience.  We were pleased to become a part of the vision. It’s the total experience. From cars to events to the upcoming retail options, there is so much going on under one roof!”

Credit_Cohn_Restaurant_Group_VintanaThe bright and spacious restaurant boasts no less than 10,000 square feet of indoor restaurant space that can accommodate up to 200 guests for lunch or dinner service and an additional 8,500 square feet of contemporary meeting and banquet space. Its striking interior includes spectacular 17-foot high windows that let in copious amounts of sunlight and provide views of the mountains that surround by day and glistening lights from vehicles and valley vistas by night.

The restaurant’s adjacent uber-chic V2L2 Lounge and Lanai has abundant indoor and outdoor terrace seating, plush couches, fire pits and private cabanas reminiscent of a California beach club. Very popular is the lounge’s “Social Hour” from 2:30pm to 6:30pm daily where patrons partake in premium food and drink specials. The beverage program here offers no less than 125 types of drink selections from around the world, including San Diego’s craft beer makers. Vintana also features two additional 10,000 square foot outdoor terraces used for large private events and serves as the location for a regular open-air concert series hosted by the restaurant.

1 Vintana Credit LuxeListReviews.comWhen asked about his personal favorite aspect of the restaurant, Provance noted, “It’s our commitment to REAL Southern Hospitality.” To this I can attest having recently visited the locale for dinner service. The staff was warm, sweet, and welcoming at all levels—from the hostesses and the server staff to the affable manager who dropped by multiple times to ensure all of our party’s epicurean expectations were being met.

With lauded Executive Chef Deborah Scott at the helm, much of Vintana’s bill of fare features Scott’s signature use of fresh ingredients and bold flavors. From the “Starter” selections, my party opted for the Oysters on the Half Shell ($3 each), which were moist and plump, tasting as if they had just been harvested. Other starters we sampled included the Poblano Chicken Empanadas ($12) with mango salsa and a decidedly authentic red curry sauce; brightly flavored Crispy (Tempura) Artichokes ($12) accompanied by a lemon caper aioli for dipping; and, my favorite, an ample basket of Pacific Rock Shrimp & Sweet Corn Fritters ($9) with spiced maple and a honey-bacon crème fraiche that perfectly balanced out the savory components.

2 Vintana Credit LuxeListReviews.comFrom the “Soup & Salad” section, we enjoyed the White Bean & Arugula Salad with rosemary, pancetta, shaved pecorino, roasted fennel, red onion, tomato and lemon oil with a balsamic reduction and bacon toast ($11); as well as Vintana’s Soup Trio ($9)—single serving cup portions of each the rich and creamy lobster bisque, the velvety and addicting tomato sage bisque, and the soup du jour—that day a hearty and perfectly seasoned chicken and rice.

My party’s “Entrée” selections were the Lobster Milanese ($34) served atop a preserved lemon-caper beurre blanc and accompanied by grilled asparagus and Yukon potatoes; and the Charbroiled Rack of Lamb ($42) with honey roasted garlic and hoisin-adobo marinade and served with bok choy and crispy miso eggplant and a honey-ginger reduction. Other entrée notables on the menu include the Macadamia and Coconut Crusted Sea Bass ($28) with crispy sea beans, roasted pineapple salsa, mashed sweet potato with lime and a ginger-lime beurre blanc; and the Bruleed Pork Porterhouse ($29) with fig jam, pan roasted pork belly, Brussels sprouts and sweet potato hash with a prosciutto demi.

On the side, I opted for the Pomegranate-Molasses Brussels Sprouts ($8) with black pepper bacon, golden raisins, and raspberry vinegar that was kicked up a notch with orange zest. For dessert, my choice was Vintana’s peach and blueberry cobbler topped with house made ice cream. Southern hospitality indeed.

With all of this culinary ingenuity, it’s no surprise Vintana has already become a favorite with the celebrity-set. Provence said, “We’ve had a number of celebrities here, including some famous golfers who live here in San Diego. Plus, Chaka Kahn, Al Jereau, Carl Verhean of Supertramp and Spiro Gyra have all played on our rooftop for our outdoor concert series.”

Despite its popularity, the restaurant team has some definitive plans for its future. Provance notes, “For the short term, we want to keep the locals happy and introduce ourselves to more and more new guests. In the long term, our plans include developing more entertainment and unique parties, events, and promotions that will continue to set us apart. Listening to our audience is also huge, and we try to always offer new and fun things for people to experience.”

This restaurant’s commitment to event-driven experiences already includes some notable happenings, such as wine tastings and the “shine and dine” lunches every Monday that allow guests to enjoy a complimentary car wash while they eat. Each Tuesday night features special “date night” menus, and Thursdays offer a great mix of music.

With such a wide and diverse palette of food and fun driven by a wildly talented and imaginative executive chef, Vintana is truly a fine dining venue like none other.

Film Review: The Best Man Holiday

They’re back! With a richer, emotional tone, writer-director Malcolm D. Lee raises the bar on the characters, that many fans thought they knew, in The Best Man Holiday.

In this long-awaited sequel to 1999’s The Best Man, Mr. Lee reassembles the original cast nearly 15 years later by extending their stories.  The college friends reunite over the Christmas holidays.

Debuting with a whopping $10.7 million on opening day, this past Friday November 15th, The Best Man Holiday holds your attention through its entirety. What made the movie a little uneasy was how each emotional period transitioned. For instance, if there was a sad moment, immediately afterwards something comical would happen making it difficult to concentrate on certain situations. In contrast, there were many moments where certain male egos were heightened while others decomposed.  There were, also, catty moments between the female leads which gave the film that familiar all around feel-good character driven comedic melodrama.

For those of you who haven’t seen the first film, here’s a brief synopsis: The plot mildly centers around the polite and mild-mannered Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs), a writer whose novel “Unfinished Business” features thinly disguised versions of his friends. One of those friends, the sassy and successful Jordan Armstrong (Nia Long) gets her copy first, and passes it on to everyone mentioned, including best friend and football heavyweight Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut). In addition to many personal moments, the book details the one-night stand between Harper and Lance’s soon to be wife, Mia Morgan (Monica Calhoun). Harper’s reluctance about Lance reading the book is a combination of the devout friendship that he shares with Lance and the fact that he’s the chosen best man for Lance and Mia’s wedding.

Fast forward to 2013. The opening credits reveal how everyone has matured, how they’ve expanded their families, and how they’ve have had major career boosts. Deep down there’s business that still needs sorting out. Without giving it away, I’ll just say – the events that take place allow some unresolved issues to come full circle while in the midst of misfortune.

Rounding out the cast is Harper’s supportive and tolerant wife, Robyn (Sanaa Lathan); the nice but unable to keep a secret Julian (Harold Perrineau); Julian’s current and former stripper girlfriend (Regina Hall); his snobbish and feisty ex-girlfriend Shelby (Melissa De Sousa); and last but not least, the sarcastic, yet charismatic Quentin Spivey, brilliantly played by (Terrence Howard). Although the entire cast had funny moments, Howard serves as the main comic relief in the film.

All of the actors seem comfortable reprising their roles.  Diggs, Chestnut, and Howard deliver stellar performances which surpass the versions they portrayed in the first film. They reconnect onscreen in ways that allow us to deeply feel the passage of time. Their characters are given larger and more pivotal moments which allow their relationships to deepen. There’s even a new cast member, Mr. Eddie Cibrian.

Without going into detail, I’ll close by mentioning – if you’re the kind that generally weeps during emotional scenes in movies, bring some Kleenex.

Tarrytown, NY is worth a visit

TarrytownOnce a mill town with only a few shops, Tarrytown, NY is located in the Tappan Zee, near Greenburgh (in Westchester County). Tarrytown was known as “Wheat Town” or “Terve Town” to be later mispronounced as Tarrytown.  The first settlers were the Dutch and the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow still stands, built in 1685. In the 1800s woman would come from other towns to visit the markets.  Today, many stores still fill the brick fronts of these antiquated buildings.

The oldest operating theater in Westchester, the Tarrytown Music Hall, built by William Wallace in 1885, is an example of shapes and corners used to create asymmetry.  The inside is just as detailed as its outside.  Victorian and Art Deco styles adorn the ceiling and stage paneling.  The inside uses mostly marble, limestone and brass trim.

There is Juliana Rose, an antique gift shop with a vintage appeal.  Handbags and vintage stuffed toys also line the cabinets.   There is the Cherry Door Thrift Shop, somewhat further down Main Street, where you can uncover that rare item you may be longing to have.   You can walk into Main Street Sweets with its red and white striped awning, where there is usually a menu outside with their special sundaes.  Toppings are abounding here.

Visit Lefteris Gyro, at the corner of Main Street and Broadway.  The blue and white-colored restaurant serves hummus with olives, and for an entrée you can decide on lamb, beef or chicken souvlaki.  Or on a stick if you prefer.  Seating is indoor or outdoor based on the weather.

Visit the Historical Society Inc.  It exhibits the history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  In employment since 1889, the preserve gives walking tours of the two historic Hudson river villages.  You’ll learn about people from the past and buildings that they occupied.  You may visit Kykuit, built by John D. Rockefeller.  It was built in 1902 and means the “high point.”  Four generations of Rockefeller have lived in the house and it overlooks the Hudson River.  Contained in the house is beautiful furniture, paintings and sculptures.  There’s, also, a large collection of 20th century sculpture on the estate.  Lyndhurst, the once home of Jay Gould, George Merritt and William Paulding, railroad contributors, shows Gothic architecture.  Like a castle, several towers are grouped together.  Green rolling hills support the building and outside halls that look out onto the water.  During the seasons, these structures appear  as different houses all together.

The town was first settled in 1645 and a lot has accumulated here since then, a lot since the Hudson River, the coming and leaving of boats, and a working town grown into a moving town.

Scenic places to travel within the United States

YosemiteparkPointy cliffs reaching into the sky.  Changing color with the time of day so that you may not be able to see all of it at once.  You would not want to climb here, well from a height perspective.  But there are several ways to experience the reservation.   The park is 1,200 square miles, in central California, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.  Mountains range from 2,000 to 13,000 feet in altitude.  Yosemite National Park was first protected in 1864. You can go bike riding, camping or birdwatching.  The formation of the mountains, some formed by glaciers, others created from volcanic sediments and granitic, a light-colored ingenious rock that changes in elevation.  Weather starts in the 40s in January and reaches the 80s by June.  Over 3.7 million people come to the park each year.  The grounds were first settled by Native Americans and in 1855 the first tourists visited the park.  The national park service was organized in 1916.  In the Yosemite Valley area, there are many waterfalls where you can receive mist from the water in the summer months.  Trails run up to the falls and the view from the cliffs is uplifting.

Savannah GeorgiaA bench, a good book and a fan are all you would need if you are sitting in one Savannah’s Historic District squares (in Georgia).  There are 22 squares in Savannah to get fresh air.  These squares are only the beginning of the things describing the Historic District.  Cobblestone roads lead to old buildings both businesses and houses.  Carriage rides withhold a gait that makes the tapping of the romp heard throughout the pathways of the city.  Savannah was settled in 1733 and it is one the largest National Historic Landmark Districts. Savannah was named from the Savannah River.  Marshes surround the river for miles inland.  The two major cities situated along the Savannah River are Savannah, and Augusta. An inspirational structure, is the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.  The parish was formed in the late 1700’s.  Two pinnacles meet the sky and at night the church fills up and light filters through its many windows.  One of the top 25 arts destinations, the Savannah theatre is a place to go to see shows, but also admire the building, built in 1818.  There is the Telfair Museum of Art, which has the oldest art gallery in the South.  It offers modern art to observers.  Enjoy some fried fish or steak, or take something with you to stroll through the streets of the once delightful city that still keeps its past inside its walls.

ChicagoFrom Art Deco to contemporary, Chicago, Illinois supports some of the tallest towering buildings in the country.  Small architectural details and an aspiration to build formations that make you look up at them as you walk beneath their shadows are part of the city’s identity. Some of the buildings are constructed out of stone and others are inlaid with steel. Look at the Chicago Board of Trade building and its clock with complete monumental sculpture figures.  Observe South La Salle Street at its entrance, black marble against elongated windows, many vernacular lines, with the ceiling covered in gold leaf. Glare at the Northwestern Atrium Center. It has many curved lines and is a reflective blue pool of illusionary covering.  Find the Carbon and Carbide building.  The exterior is furled in black granite and the tower is dark green terra-cotta with gold leaf accents. Strong lines shape the interesting  framework of the building.  Shop the Magnificent  Mille, a long strip running from North Michigan Avenue to Oak Street. Window shop at several designer stores.  Take a Duck Tour over the river in a marine closed boat and tour the city’s abundant edifices.  Or admire the view from the bridge located aside the Tribune Tower.  On the other side of the Magnificent Mille take in the scenes of Lake Michigan.  A serene waterfront at the end of a bustling street.  You can walk or run the path that follows along the lake, and on warm days even go for a swim.

Why Live in Portugal?

ViseuimageRemoteness and bareness have created, in Portugal, a way in which it is part of Europe geographically, but by itself – culturally, socially, economically, politically and psychologically. For this reason it turns to its own securing of land for resources and amalgamating of people.

Portugal is outlined on the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and on the north and east by Spain.  As a result, Portugal is one of the most peaceful places to live.  The inconsistency in landscapes are part of what makes Portugal so content to live.

Islands are one accent of the island.  There are three archipelagos that make up the islands.  Small mountain ranges brace the western side of the country.  Rivers intersect them and they plateau with green valleys, and granite or schist.

Portugal’s greatest river runs east – west from Spain all the way to the Atlantic, cutting the country nearly in half.  The climate is very temperate in Portugal.  The sun shines without surrendering.  Winters are pleasant and summers hot and dry.  The number of hours of sunshine in the country per year comes to as high as 3,300 in the South, and 1,600 in the North, some of the highest in Europe.

Property in Portugal is less expensive than the European average.  Renting is also of good value.  The cost of food is much is lower than other Western European Countries.

One of the most rare places to visit in Portugal, is the city of Viseu.  Coming from the Roman word “viso”, Viseu gets its name from Roman dialect, meaning “good view.”  It lies at the highest point between the Spanish border and the Atlantic Ocean.  And its view is inescapable.

The history of the city wavers through everything in it and a 3rd century Roman wall built to protect the city stands, as well as a gate.  Within the gates of the Renaissance city is a plethora of artwork.  Vasco Fernades is known for his painting of Christ and the apostles.  The Museo Grao Vasco is where art from the famous Vasco, himself can be seen.  They create artistic regard in Viseu, along with a mural made of blue and white tile forming country life backdrops.  A twin towered cathedral, built in 1775 is the Cavo do Viriato.  Vasco Fernades paintings hang on the wall of the cathedral.  Against a street of eateries is the Praca Dom Duarte, a bronze statue of King Duarte.  A great place to see old buildings.  There is also a lot of stone detailing on doors and gates with tile accents on some.

Parks and gardens sit in many areas, a place to enjoy some green lawns.  Several dance and craft festivals are held in the city.  Pacos dos Cunhas de Santar is a wine tasting house that has been converted from a 17th century manor house.  To stay cool when sipping your ideal drink, visit the Minus 5 Degree Lounge.  Everything made out of ice is brought in from glaciers from Canada.
